For the vast majority of men, radical prostatectomy and impotence are very inextricably linked.  Even if nerves or arteries are not removed or damaged during surgery men may notice signs of erectile dysfunction as a side effect. As the number prostatectomy surgeries has continued to increase, more and more research has focused on the improvement of male sexual function afterward. A list of some available treatments options are below:

Oral treatments include pills such as Levitra®, Cialis®, and Viagra® have become widely accepted over the years. However, many men suffering from prostate cancer may also take medications that can potentially interfere with oral medications. In such cases, other treatment options are available, and include intracavernous pharmacotherapy (ICP), vacuum suction devices (VSDs), hormone replacement therapy and sex therapy.

ICP treatment is a well-recognized and effective treatment because it is a painless, localized injection that works almost instantaneously.  ICP injections include a combination of FDA-approved vasodilators that are supplied to the soft tissue in the penis, allowing more blood to enter into the penile chamber, which results in a firm and natural-feeling erection. ICP treatments are often preferred by men whose medications may be complicated by pills or who desire a more fast-acting response.

Men looking for fast responses often use ICP injections in conjunction with vacuum suction devices. Vacuum devices, sometimes referred to as pumps, suction the air out of the cylindrical tube, forcing blood to be drawn into the penile chamber. A rubber ring is then placed at the base of the penis, keeping blood from leaving the area. This shows great results but has also resulted in cases of tissue and muscle damage to the penis.

Other treatments such as hormone replacement therapy, penile prosthetic surgery and sex therapy are used in more specific cases of erectile dysfunction. It is important to discuss your concerns with your doctor in order to determine which treatment option is best for you.
